Many of these are intestinal parasites that invade tissues or the circulatory system through the digestive tract. Other waterborne diseases are caused by viruses or metazoan parasites, including certain Nematoda (roundworms) that cause Dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease) and Schistosomatidae (blood flukes). Chemical pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes—can also contaminate water through industrial dumping, pipeline leaks, jet fuel spills, or heat-damaged plastic pipes, and have been associated with headaches, nausea, tumor formation, and increased cancer risk.
